So why not just use a laptop with a real DAW when you are at the mixing stage? Laptops now are just as portable as iPads. While it's the closest out of all them as far as DAW-Style mixing, it's still not as efficient and streamlined as mixing on an actual DAW. Here's the thing I don't really get when people say "Cubasis 3 on an iPad is closest to mixing on a DAW". It will be a learning curve, but it's not that bad. I may try the beatstep to sequence my tracks, next.įamiliarity. Looking at "drawing" the patterns right into the track and using an audio unit app like 909, which ports the sequencer over. I'm going to have to learn some new tricks here. I have an Arturia beatstep I couldn't get to trigger drums on Garageband reliably. You can work within a set loop or just let a track stretch 'til you stop recording. Liking the more traditional DAW approach in general.
Tried Model D as an audio unit, worked brilliantly. Pulled the trigger and so far really like Cubasis.Īctually getting better sounds out of the stock synths - both the microsonic digital/sampler (way better bass) and the micrologue analog synth. There's also a few other new features like midi learn for external controllers, and auv3 multi out support. Not just stock compressor but any AuV3 that supports sidechaining. Just a heads up in case you haven't heard, cubasis just updated to 3.3 with sidechaining. In the end, if you are working towards iPad only setup, cubasis is the way to go.
There are a bunch of third party apps you can purchase to fill the holes of moving from GarageBand to cubasis, but that can get expensive especially considering GarageBand is 100% free, cubasis retails $50 alone without in app purchases. Also GarageBand has live loops, and cubasis just doesn’t offer this, it’s designed for composing/producing not performing. The drawbacks in my opinion is just the instruments and drummer, cubasis has some instruments but the selection is not as well developed as GarageBand. The workflow is just so much more intuitive and simplified, not much menu digging compared to GarageBand.

I’ve used GarageBand and cubasis 3, and while there are some trade offs, cubasis 3 is much closer to a full desktop DAW.
